Alan Davie
Alan Davie 1920-2014 Invitation to Join The Dance 2012 oil on canvas
jameshymangallery.com
I have posted Alan Davie many times before on this blog. He is touchstone for me from the early 60's when I first was introduced to his work by a professor and friend at SDSU. I identified with Davie's sense of color, iconography, and joyful approach to making paintings and drawings. To me, he was the Scottish Krishna. His use of universal symbols, text and exuberant color as he followed his own distinctive path made him a shaman for me.
Davie passed away at the age of 93 after a long and productive career.

Heather Gwen Martin
Heather Gwen Martin Crest 2017 oil on linen 77" x 72"

Heather Martin had her first major exhibition opening last night at L. A. Louver Gallery in Venice, CA. This new body of work continues to expand and refine her interest in abstraction and color relationships. Skeins of bold color intermingle with fine lines of tertiary, secondary and primary's to give the viewer a glimpse into the other worldly vision Martin is engaged with. Straight forward and luscious, the paintings capture the appearance of a bunch of colored balloons popping simultaneously in space.

Steve Gibson Leaving Cairns 2017 gouache on paper 22" x 30"
I have been revisiting old themes and updating them for the past few years. The above is the most resent example. Reconnecting can bring a new resolution to thoughts and ruminations as a person goes through life. I am reformulating and clarifying how I see the world.
