What do you think of when you think small canvas contemporary painting......This exudes monumentality in a very small package. More than a study, Suul has captured what many painters can't.

Brendan Lancaster

Brendan Lancaster  Untitled (round drawing)  oil on canvas  23.62" x 19.68"
brendanlancaster.com
I feel like this image represents a person trying to extricate themselves from a straight jacket. All the tension and muted color gives me the sense that Lancaster is really pushing into interesting territory with his painting. Any one else have any feelings about it?

Matt Carter

Matt Carter  Untitled  2014  glitter, acrylic, magic marker and silver leaf on linen  36" x 24"
luisdejesus.com

Carter takes formalism and turns it on it's head with his new paintings exhibited at Luis De Jesus in Culver City. Starting with the harlequin pattern and geometry he quickly subverts the picture plane with glitter, metal leaf smudges and smears to great affect. The stretcher bars are warped and cobbled together to further the subversion. Sort of " I don't give a shit but I really do" is the feeling I get when being in front of them.

Archbold is an Irish painter exploring paints possibilities in an
intuitive manner. She applies paint and removes it as she develops
her investigations. Her efforts are ultimately resolved with interesting
                        solutions that I find intriguing.

Melanie Parke

Melanie Parke  Heidi Vase  2014  oil on canvas  12" x 12"
melanieparke.com

Parke's still lifes are wonderfully alive for me. Spontaneous brush work, intellectual use of color, close observation and a sense of urgency imbue her work. She paints the every day and makes it seem extraordinary. When viewing her paintings I want to live in that world of harmony and beauty. And she went to SAIC!

Mary DeVincentis

Mary DeVincentis  The Sins Of The Fathers  oil on canvas  44" x 34"

Mary is another FB friend whose work I enjoy. She blends figurative and narrative together with a strong sense of design and color. The more abstract work she does has an interesting element of fantasy and formalism.
