Anne Seidman
Anne Seidman Untitled (GB15) 2015 pencil on rag paper 35.75" x 45"
georgebillis.com
Yesterday I posted a piece by Dennis Koch who uses colored pencil to make intense geometric tondos. Today I am posting Anne Seidman who also uses colored pencil to make multicolored geometric tropes on paper. She is showing at George Billis across the street from Luis De Jesus in Culver City. Is there something in the air right now? At any rate they are exceptional works that include painting as well. Worth the trip to L.A.

Koch's exquisitely drawn works on paper are currently being exhibited at Luis De Jesus Gallery in Culver city. The drawings reference a universe or cosmology that has inspired Koch over time. I don't know about the inspiration but the quality of the work speaks for itself.

Andrew Baron
Andrew Baron Hammurabi's Code 2014 oil on canvas 72" x 54"

I enjoy the way Baron uses paint. There is a lusciousness to the surface
as it intertwines with the underpainting he produces through layers of
thoughtful applications. The graphic quality of the imagery alludes to some
tangible element but we are never quite sure what it is. His titles give clues
but we are left to reflect on the work through our own filters.

Jonathan Apgar

I have been following Apgars work for a couple of years now. I saw his work at
George Lawson's space in Culver City before he moved back to the Bay Area.
I am continually impressed with the paintings development and his commitment to
to his craft. He has Bonnard's palette blended with an intellectual curiosity that makes
viewing them a feast for the eyes and mind.

Gosia Machon
Gosia Machon Weiches Moor 2014 ink on paper 19.68" x 27.5"

Machon is an artist living in Germany. Living in a country so rich with figurative antecedents, it is easy to see how she uses and subverts iconography to suit her individual style. I really enjoy her insouciant line and the elegance of economy in her compositions.

Clinton King
Clinton King Done Before Finished 2014 oil on canvas 24" x 18"
clintonkingart.com
King is another grad from SAIC. He lives and works in Brooklyn now, as it
seems so many young painters do. This painting separates itself from some of
others King has done in that it seems more complicated and hard to define. I
like the off kilter color combination and the ambiguity of the space that is set up
by the deliberateness of the drawing and blended paint handling.
