Went to Orange County Museum of Art the other day to see Dan Camerons latest curatorial effort. California Landscape into Abstraction: Selections from the Orange County Museum of Art which included a wonderful painting by Brian Fahlstrom. Unfortunately, I could not reproduce the painting with it's extraordinary color and paint handling. However, Marc Foxx had this image available so I am showing it. He is a young painter to keep an eye on. L.A. is producing some very interesting painters these days.

John Altoon 1925-1969 Ocean Park Series # 12 oil on canvas 81 5/16" x 84"
www.lacma.org
Altoon was an L.A. based artist that died early of a heart attack at the age of 43. I was influenced by his use of biomorphic forms mixed with an abstract impressionist approach to paint application. His use of a white ground with semi-narrative imagery floating on it was new and exciting for me in the early and late 60's. Along with Guston, Nutt, and a few other's he was one of my early influences.

Still was arguably one of the most original members of the Ab/Ex group of painters of that era. Perhaps it was because he was from the land west of the Rockies. His work still holds viewers in awe 34 years after his passing.

Charlie Kitchings of Ambach and Rice gallery in L.A. has given his gallery over to Dan Weinberg, who was the prior tenant in the space on Wilshire blvd. Weinberg is showing a group exhibition typical of his year end salon style shows of the past. There are over 40 artists that Weinberg showed in the past including Richard Artschwager, James Siena, Andrew Masullo, Mary Heilmann, Jeff Koons, Richard Tuttle, Carrol Dunham, Alfred Jenson and John Wesley among many others. In many cases he was the first gallery to show many of these artists.
Weinberg is a private dealer today and attends many art fairs. This is the first time since he left the Ambach & Rice space he has had such an exhibition in L.A.

Chilton is a Southern California painter via SAIC where he received his MFA. His
paintings have an apparent simplicity to them that is countered by his use of OP
devices and an obsessive approach to paint application. They are quite arresting
when viewed in person.

Native Chicago artist who studied at SAIC, Murray became a major painter in the 70's when it was much more difficult for women to break into the contemporary painting scene. She is one of only 4 woman to have been given a retrospective at MOMA in New York. Her vibrant paintings of abstract forms that eventually developed into shaped canvas's were always a joy for me to experience.

Joyce Treiman
Joyce Treiman 1922-1991 Joker and Flower 14" x 11" pastel on paper 1990
Treiman came from the midwest to Southern California in the 40's after studying at Iowa University and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She taught for years at UCLA. Her love of the old masters and Eakins is always evident in her figure landscapes that are infused with surrealist undertones. It seems that you just can't take the Chicago influence out of an artist once they have succumbed to it's siren song.

Steve Gibson 1971 Skunky Do and Skunky Lou 16" x 20" serigraph on paper
Pulling prints in a car port studio in La Jolla. Had to work only in the morning when the wind did not blow. It is amazing what conditions someone will work in to accomplish the task at hand. Christina Ramberg 1946-1995 Untitled (Torso With Leaf) 1980 acrylic on masonite 15" x 11.5"

Ramberg received her MFA at SAIC the year I arrived to start mine. She was an integral part of the Chicago Imagist movement that had started in the late 60's with the Hairy Who group of Jim Nutt, Gladys Neilson, Jim Falconer, Art Green. Her distinct take on the female form coincided with the feminist movement that had started in the 60's. Her beautifully executed works reflected her interest in the female condition, social mores and a outsider's take on society.

www.artveras.com
Born in Russia, Charchoune wanted to be a painter. He was rejected by the Academy in Moscow because he could not draw the figure from nature. Undaunted, he immigrated to western Europe to study with the contemporaries of modern art of the time. His demeanor was such that he could not adhere to the dogma of any movement. So, he became a maverick and worked in many styles that suited his penchant for Russian symbolism and abstraction. Not really a cubist, he co-opted the style to suite his idiosyncratic approach to painting.

Lisa Sanditz new paintings will be on view on the new online gallery that Torrance Art Museum is setting up. I am the first artist/curator to curate an online exhibition so it will be interesting to see the response to this new venue. Many artists that appear on this blog will be included as well. I will keep you posted as to the exact date of the opening. Most likely the first week in November. The painters in the exhibition have been so generous and accommodating. I feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to work with them.
