Thomas Kapsalis

                    Thomas Kapsalis  Table In A Box  1073  oil on canvas  12" x 9 3/4"
                    corbettvsdempsey.com
I remember Kapsalis at SAIC in the 70s as a caring, mild mannered professor in the painting department. I did not really come to appreciate his work until much later. I think it's wonderful how we develop our taste, likes and dislikes as we grow older and hopefully wiser. Thomas Kapsalis is over 90 now and to the best of my knowledge still painting in Chicago. I now wish I had gotten to know him better but like most grad students I was lost in my ego and thought I was too cool.

Alan Davie

Alan Davie  Double Meditation No. 3 (Trik Trok)  2004  oil on board  13.76" x 16.11"

Alan Davie has always been one of my favorite artists. He passed this past year in his 90's after a fantastic career as a painter/musician. His inner directed work inspired and influenced me as well as countless other like minded artists.

Steve Roden

Steve Roden  When Time Equals Space  2011  acrylic and oil on linen  60" x 60"
inbetweennoise.com

Roden is one of the finest artists in So. Cal. His interests spread across music, sound installations, sculpture and of course painting. His structured yet intuitive work has the ability to bring abstract concepts and interdisciplinary practices to a place that resonates with intellect and passion.

Lucy Mink-Covello

              Lucy Mink-Covello  Vacation  2014  oil and acrylic on canvas  72" x 60"
              lucymink.com
This latest painting by Lucy Mink-Covello caught my attention while viewing
her website. The complexity of the composition and the addition of more color
adds an interesting touch to her latest abstract work. The larger size is allowing
her more flexibility than with her earlier smaller paintings. She is also heading off
to Italy for a residency that should further expand the possibilities for this fine
              painter.

David Salle

David Salle  Freak Flag  2015  oil, acrylic, archival digital print and felt on linen  84" x 96"
skarstedt.com

These current pop mashups from Salle look strangely familiar. Always interesting to see what he will come up with next. Like Schnable,  I feel he is somewhat haunted by his success in the late 70's and early 80's. The question we all have, "what do I paint". This one is quite inventive.

Valerio Adami

Valerio Adami  Spettacolo Allaperto  1967  oil on canvas  31.9" x 39.4"
artnet.com

Adami and Patrick Caulfield were two painters that I have always had an interest in. Their use of line and bold color, interior and exterior space in the 60's was a harbinger of things to come in the 70's graphic styles in commercial art as well as funkier movements in the graphic based imagery of pop surrealism. I love the ambiguity of the Adami piece illustrated above. Both artists had such conviction.

Steve Curry

Steve Curry  Frequency Series # 54  2014  oil on canvas  13" x 21"
stephenpcurry.com

Steve Curry is a painter from San Diego and a good friend of mine. His recent paintings
explore color, texture and perception on an intimate scale. He is and has been a curator and teacher for many years and flown under the radar much of the time. I think it is time we all had a chance to see the work of this exceptional artist on a broader scale.

Augusto Sandroni

Augusto Sandroni  Untitled (Circus Holiday)  oil on canvas  24" x 18"
                   augustosandroni.com

Sandroni restores my faith in painting. His unfettered approach to image making
rings with an authenticity and verve that is all too often missing in contemporary
painting and sculpture. He references Arte Povera,  the vernacular, and auto didactics
in his current work. I really enjoy his intuitive color selections and rough hewn surfaces
as he paints and repaints the work until it resonates with his particular aesthetic
sensibility. Since he lives in San Diego, I'm assured of a sounding board that I can
connect with on a consistent basis.

Gary Stephan  Untitled  2014  acrylic on canvas  30" x 30"

Gary Stephan's paintings  are always evolving. He is one of the most intelligent painters working today. I have admired his work since the 70's and continue that admiration through today. His latest work is smart, understated, refined and above all beautiful. I wish I owned one.

Deborah Remington

Deborah Remington  Memphis  1969  oil on canvas  60" x 53"
                  deborahremington.com

I remember Remington's work in the 60's and 70"s as giving me the feeling
of abstraction subverted by surrealism. Neither here or there in the scheme
of art history as it was written up to that point.
Looking at them now I understand how she could have been wrongly marginalized
and should be looked at for what she was, a fully committed self directed
painter of substantial works of art. Odd how time and distance can clear the
              mind.
