JOHN OLIVER LEWIS

1 comment:

  1. John Oliver Lewis is a sculptor based in San Diego. He arrived here via University of Wisconson where he received his BFA and University of North Texas, Denton where he earned his MFA.

His unique technique uses slabs of earthen ware to construct his forms and then acrylic paint to color them after they are fired in a kiln. The use of humor, irony combined with his abstract forms set up an interesting dialectic that allows the viewer develop their own interpretation.

I view them as a continuing investigation of ceramic sculpture started in the mid century by Volkos, Mason, Shaw and Arneson. Independent of the craft ,they are strong sculptural statements by a young man on the move.
