This is the last week to see Heather Gwen Martins exhibition at Luis De Jesus in Culver City.

Chris Martin is showing new paintings at Kordansky in Culver City. The exhibition is an opportunity for many Los Angeles viewers to experience this New York artist's work for the first time. Martin has been and continues to be a seminal figure in the Brooklyn art community. He has gained an almost shaman like stature with younger painters there. 

These new works explore performative, mystical and cultural elements as Martin develops his vernacular with contemporary paintings past and it's future. Southern California artists should not miss the opportunity to experience these works by an important painter.

Saw a wonderful exhibition of Pensato's work at Santa Monica Museum of Art yesterday.
This was her first museum exhibition after working in her Brooklyn studio's for more than 30 years. She is truly an exceptional artist. Pensato gets more out of black than anyone since William Kentridge. Her large drawings and installation piece were magnificent.

Brett Cody Rogers

Rogers paints large paintings and makes photographs that inform the paintings. His grandfather was an artist that made modernist sculpture in the midwest. Interestingly, the younger Rogers has used the elders sculpture as a starting point for the photographs that in turn help him define his paintings. Odd how sometimes there is a circularity in creative thought and practice.

Holmquist is an MFA candidate at SAIC. His accomplished paintings have a hit and miss quality to them as he explores the possibilities of paint, narration and abstraction. There is great facility in his hand and his eye for color is spot on. Looking for great things in the future from this inquiring young man.

Ray Yoshida

This painting is typical of Yoshida's work of the 70's. His imaginative use of abstracted forms he borrowed from comics, illustrations and folk art were combined to make patterned compositions that evoked an ambiguous narrative. While not part of the "Hairy Who" group, he was very influential to them as well as many other artists that passed though SAIC during his tenure there.
