David Lloyd
David Lloyd Untitled 2016 acrylic on wood 23" x 22"
klowdenmann.com
David Lloyd is having a one person exhibition of new paintings at Klowden Mann in Culver City opening this Sat. Jan. 28. Any one in L A interested in painting from an artist that has been around a while should try and attend. He is an eloquent speaker and fine painter. Should his current exhibition be as interesting as his last ( and I'm sure it will be) this will be an excellent opportunity to see a seasoned painter in his prime.

Gary Stephan is in a show at Hionas Gallery in NYC. Those of you on the east coast should avail yourselves if you are in the area. I have been a fan of his work since the 80's an each year he seems to get even better than the year before. He is a masterful paint handler, colorist and conjurer of unique perspectives in painting.

Heidi Pollard
Heidi Pollard Burgeon 2016 oil and spray paint on canvas 60" x 60"
heidipollard.com
Heidi Pollard is a painter from New Mexico that I have posted here before. Her work resonates with me on many levels. Her paint handling is skillful without excessive bravado. Her subject matter is personal but at the same time universal in nature. Her allusions to real and imagined worlds unfold into evocative compositions that are simple yet complex enough to hold ones attention. In short, she is my kind of painter and well deserving of her recent grant from the Joan Mitchell Foundation.

Tristano Di Robilant's sculpture is on view at MCASD downtown campus. His sculpture is a mesmerizing mix of elegant materials and intuitive organic forms. Cast aluminum, ceramics and glass come together in unexpected ways the keep the viewer completely engaged.
Di Robilant worked with Murano glass blowers to create his unique take on the material as it related to his sculptural interest. What developed is on view at MCASD downtown. He will be an artist in residence over the next month as he works on his next iteration.

Brenda Goodman
Brenda Goodman Complicated Happiness 2016 oil on wood 50" x 36"
baileygallery.com
Brenda Goodman is exhibiting work at Jeff Bailey Gallery in Hudson N.Y. The above example of one of her paintings should be reason enough for any one in the NYC area to visit the exhibition.
I have admired her work for the past few years since it came to my attention on social media. There are many reasons for my admiration. One, she is tenacious. Her career has lasted over 50 years. Two, she paints from the gut with an authenticity that comes from having lived and learned what is important in making paintings. Three, the work is just plain beautiful, reflecting a life of struggle and accomplishment.
