Nick Wilkenson at Left Field Gallery in San Luis Obispo has consistently shown interesting and provocative work. His Central Coast location is off the beaten path but well worth the stop when traveling north or south along the California coast. Ben Sanders is just one of the many top notch artists he is showing this month.

William Conger
William Conger Evening Beach 2015 oil on wood 16" x 12"

I have posted William Conger's work before on this blog. I mentioned that he was a accomplished painter from Chicago and has worked tirelessly for the past 50 years making modernist paintings of the highest caliber. I am posting this recent painting because I feel it's simplicity and exquisite color is a bit of a break through for him. The luminosity and subtle tones interacting with the geometric structure are coming together in compatible yet illusive ways. The painting is an example of a dedication to abstraction and painting that is enviable and remarkable for an artist that seems to have found the fountain of youth.

Michael Miller
Michael Miller Night Feeders 1973 multi plate color etching 23.75" x 17"

Michael Miller was a seminal connection in my development as an artist. Without his support and encouragement I would not have had the chance to go to SAIC in the mid 70's and had many of the opportunities to excel as a creative person. The above print is an example of the work he was doing in the mid 70's. He was included in many print and drawing exhibits nationally around that time as was I. We had a mutual and shared interest in funky imagery that was highly crafted personal and idiosyncratic.
Michael's passing last year was rather sudden and a surprise and it is only now that I feel I can write about how important he was to me. He was a mentor, friend and colleague. I recently did an artist talk about my recent work and referred to an artists antecedents and how important it is to recognize them. Michael was certainly one of my most important influences and continues to be. I learned from him the importance of humility, hard work, craftsmanship and above all, generosity. He was the main reason I would return to Chicago every few years so I could reconnect with a past that is now beginning to fade.

Sad to be taking down my show at Point Loma Nazarene University Keller Gallery this week. I will be proposing it to other venues in Southern California soon. So, if you missed it here there may be another opportunity to see it in your neck of the woods soon.
