Mary Heilmann

Mary Heilmann  Firey Pour 2011  oil on wood panel 40"x31.75"

Heilmann's work has a long and rich history. She has worked as an abstract painter and ceramist for over 40 years. Largely overlooked for a large part of her career, she has gained notoriety over the past decade for her bold color and imagery that alludes to elements of reality or narrative. Many younger artists are picking up on her take on painting today.

I think most of my friends will know why I posted this image of Richard's. Love the obsessive quality of the imagery.

Alan Davie

Alan Davie B. 1920 " where I would be and how long gone"  2005 oil on canvas 29.95"x39.93"

www.jameshymangallery.com

Davie is now 93 and still painting and drawing regularly. His work has a shamanistic style that reminds me a bit of Alfred Jensen's numerical/alphabetical works and Jungian symbolist work. He had some early success in the states in the 50's but has since concentrated on working and showing in the U.K. Too bad for us. Would be great to see a retrospective of his life's work some where here.

Richard Diebenkorn

Richard Diebenkorn (1922-1993)  Ocean Park #79  oil on canvas 1975 100"x81"
www.philamuseum.org

Diebenkorn was a west coast painter associated with the Bay Area figurative artists David Park, Elmer Bischoff and others. The Ocean Park series of paintings done in the mid 70's were elegant tropes on abstract landscapes. His indebtedness to Matisse was obvious and his hand was just as facile as that great master. His use of horizontal, vertical and diagonal structure skeined with luscious color was mimicked by many but mastered by only him.

Brickhouse is a painter from New York. His poetic, humanist imagery amplifies his approach to what it means to be alive and painting in todays world. Teacher, mentor and beacon for those who yearn for understanding of life's mysteries, his life and work are inseparable.

Sidney Nolan  Ned Kelly  1946  enamel on composition board  35.75"x47.83"
nga.gov.au

Sidney Nolan captured the spirit of Australia with his iconic series of paintings done in house enamel on composition board. His subject was the outback landscape of a raw and untamed country. The Ned Kelly paintings were narratives illustrating the life of an outlaw/poet. They became symbols of the Aussie myth that is still prevalent today.

Julien Hoeber  Excution Changes # 73 B  acrylic on panel  69"x46"  2013

Hoeber's show at Blum and Poe in LA is one that uses the museum like space to great advantage. His paintings and installations hold the space as if they were made for it. Perhaps they were. Conceptually rigorous and beautifully executed they are captivating. Definitely worth the effort to experience.

Charles Arnoldi Untitled  1992 oil on canvas approx. 72"x96"

www.oma-online.org

Charles Arnoldi has a retrospective of sorts at Oceanside Museum of Art in Oceanside, Ca.

Acknowledged as a master painter by many, his large and colorful paintings are beautiful and accomplished. Repeated forms and elements show up is this exhibition that has works that date from the 70's to 2013. The above monochromatic "Untitled" 1992 was the exception. This painting was the most expressive and risky. It could have failed but didn't.
I, for one, am in the camp of admirers. He has traveled a long and beautiful trail over the past 40 plus years.

Peter Shear  Untitled 10"x13" acrylic and gel medium on canvas 2913
Shear is a painter who paints spontaneous and engaging work. He is self taught and has
the ability to connect in a visceral way to the psyche of a viewer. His straight forward approach is accessible and assertive. Fresh and uncompromising work.
