Brenda Goodman Complicated Happiness 2016 oil on wood 50" x 36" baileygallery.com
Brenda Goodman is exhibiting work at Jeff Bailey Gallery in Hudson N.Y. The above example of one of her paintings should be reason enough for any one in the NYC area to visit the exhibition. I have admired her work for the past few years since it came to my attention on social media. There are many reasons for my admiration. One, she is tenacious. Her career has lasted over 50 years. Two, she paints from the gut with an authenticity that comes from having lived and learned what is important in making paintings. Three, the work is just plain beautiful, reflecting a life of struggle and accomplishment.

Opening on Oct. 7 and running through Oct. 28, if you are in the area stop by and say hello to Nick Wilkenson the owner and director. The prices on these smallish works are very reasonable considering the artists included whose careers are taking off or all ready established.

Bascha Mon Teapot Lost Boat With Heavy Pink Sky 2014 oil on paper 22,5" x 30" baschamon.com
Bascha Mon is an artist that fuses abstraction and narration in a wonderful straight forward manner. Her work imbues the spontaneity and thoughtfulness of a artist who is fully engaged with her process and committed to her view of the world. The afore mentioned attributes combined with empathy for humanity make her efforts resonate with me.
I like Zak Prekops painting because it is so apparently simple yet complex. He paints behind the canvas and on top of it. He leaves raw canvas and stained areas that set up a complex set of visuals that intrigue me. He is also the son of an old friend of mine from Chicago days in the 70's. A creative family of 3 sons and a father that continue to push boundaries in their chosen fields.
