Evelyn Statsinger

Evelyn Statsinger was a stalwart in the Chicago Monster Roster group and always a favorite of mine. She seemed to epitomize the Chicago school of painting and drawing in the latter part of the 20th century. Wonderful color, obsessive, finely crafted and steeped in the vernacular of outsider art.

John Mills

John Mills  Lets Agree To Disagree  2015  graphite and oil on canvas   60" x 60"
rosamundfelsen.com

John Mills exhibition up now at Rosamund Felsen in L. A. is his second with the venerable gallery in the arts district of downtown. I curated an online exhibition of Johns work a few years back on www.curatingcontemporary.com. I was impressed with his work then and am even more now with his latest effort of airy abstractions. He has carved out territory in an area of abstract painting that is somewhere between automatic drawing and illustrating the unknowable. The subtleness of the ground along with the authenticity of the drawing style combine to make an unsettling viewing experience in the best way possible. The work is a perfect melding of abstraction and allusion to a private world Mills has created for us to explore.
