Holly Coulis
Holly Coulis Large Lemon, Stripes, Knives 2017 oil on linen 24.13" x 30.13"

Holly Coulis' new paintings at Cherry and Martin are exquisite in their execution. The artist has a way of handling oil paint that goes beyond craftsmanship and takes it to the sublime. The delicate line work and subtle modulation of color within the shapes she chooses takes the narrative to another space altogether. The work reminds me a bit of Trevor Winkfield's, but instead of symbols she chooses the every day items one would encounter in the kitchen, garden or other elements of domesticity. Like Morandi, she infuses the every day with a charm and almost mystical quality.

Christina Ramberg
Christina Ramberg (1946-1995 ) Untitled Torso With Pants 1982 acrylic on masonite 13" x 11.5"

Christina Ramberg's painting Untitled Torso With Pants is a great example of how a artist can say so much with so little. Her narrative on women in our culture during her shortened life is alive today as much or more so than when she painted it in 1982. Her ability to bring forth a dialectic that included gender, bias and femininity with her painting was admired by me then and is perhaps even more salient today.
