Caitlin Lonegan
Caitlin Lonegan Untitled 2011 oil on canvas 72" x 72"
acmelosangeles.com
Lonegan is one of only a few painters in the Made In Los Angeles exhibition at the Hammer in Westwood. In my opinion the best painter included. She has pushed her work to even more interesting investigations that involve heavy empasto's combined with tints and washes that are of greater complexity than this work shown at ACME a few years back.

Lisa Adams
Lisa Adams Land Of Forgotten Dreams 2013 oil on canvas over panel 20" x 24"
cb1gallery.com
I had not experienced Adams painting in person so I was excited to see her exhibition at CB1 Gallery in downtown L.A. She is a masterful paint handler and inventive image maker. This group of recent paintings exemplify her unique take on the use of illusionistic passages combined with painterly elements that take the viewer down the rabbit hole that becomes disconcerting and wonderful at the same time.

Masullo is having an exhibition of paintings this month at Texas Gallery in Houston. If you are in the area it should not be missed. His exceptional work gives evidence of his singular vision of what paint can do in a small format. Deceptively simple yet conceptually rich.

Saul painted this work the year I graduated from high school. I wish I had been made aware of his presence in those early years. He remains a touch stone for me even today.

Guy Goodwin I Tread The Dark Mouth 1979 oil on wood 47" x 46" x 5"

Guy Goodwin gives evidence that the race does not always go to the swiftest.
His steady development as an artist over the past 50 years helps make the
point that hard work and insightful investigations of visual phenomenon can
yield marvelous results.

J J Manford Hudson River Magic # 2 acrylic and spray paint on canvas 22" x 15"

Manford is another transplant from the SAIC painting program living in NYC. I like the way he references historical themes with his unique contemporary take on figuration and abstraction. His paint handling is sophisticated and at the same time straight forward and unabashed.

Jeni Spota San Damiano 2009 oil on canvas 18" x 20"

Saw this work at MCA Chicago a few years back and again in LA at Brennan in Chinatown. All oil paint applied in an impasto style based on religious themes from Italy. New work is using collage more but still has a spiritual feel.

I like the way O'Dell uses strong graphic imagery to sustain his explorations into abstraction. I have posted his work before so he really must be saying something that I agree with or admire greatly.

Allison Schulnik
Allison Schulnik Protea 2012 oil on canvas stretched over board 30" x 24"
www.allisonschulnik.com
I first saw Schulnik's work at Mark Moore gallery in Santa Monica a few years back. The air was redolent with the smell of oil paint as soon as you entered the gallery. I am sure the paint had skinned but had not cured yet. Schulnik is also a claymation animator and has done some commercial work for recording artists videos. Her approach to handling paint is direct and assertive as she mixes the paint from the tube to her pallet to the surface of the painting. She builds a painting much in the same way she builds her clay figures and scenes for the animation. At once repulsive and seductive I was attracted to them immediately. Another San Diego native is navigating the art world in her own distinctive way.
