Andrew Holmquist
Andrew Holmquist Big Leap 2013 oil and spray paint on canvas 72" x 84"
www.andrewholmquist.com
I curated Andrew in an on line exhibition last year and was impressed with his maturity as a painter at such an early age. He is having his MFA exhibition at SAIC starting this month at the Sullivan Galleries across the street from The Art Institute of Chicago. His verve, energy and skill set are even more impressive today.

Joanne Greenbaum
Joanne Greenbaum Untitled 2014 oil, acrylic, flashe and graphite on canvas 90" x 80"
www.joannegreenbaum.com
Greenbaum is one of the most interesting painters working today. Her intuition takes her to new levels of insight with each painting. Her latest body of work is showing at Rachel Uffner in NYC and demonstrates her prowess as visual instigator and masterful painter.
Martin Kippenberger
Martin Kippenberger 1996 Untitled (from the Raft of Medusa Series) oil on canvas
59.06" x 70.87"

Kippenberger painted the Raft of Medusa Series as he was dying of liver cancer. A heroic last act by one of the most interesting artists of his generation.

Philip Taaffe
Philip Taaffe Thorn Heads 2013 mixed media on canvas 95.5" x 64"

I like the way Taaffe uses printmaking/stencil tactics to develop complex and intriguing compositions. Elegant and approachable yet slightly off kilter.

Paul Behnke
Paul Behnke Phantom 2013 acrylic on canvas 18" x 18"
www.paulbehnke.net www.structureandimagery.blogspot.com
Behnke is an abstract painter living in Brooklyn N.Y. His high key colored abstractions carry on the tradition of abstract painting developed in the middle of the last century by painters such as Hans Hoffman, Franz Kline and others. He invents possibilities with his intuitive use of color and form in his compositions. Like a jazz master, he reconfigures tradition into a personal vision through improvisation. Behnke also authors a very informative blog called Structure and Imagery which documents much of what is happening in the NYC painting world.

I think you all know why I like this painting. Rachel Malin is included in the National Arts and Letters invitational in NYC closing this week.
Leslie Baum
Leslie Baum A Thimbful Above 2013 oil on canvas 24" x 30"
www.deveningprojects.com
An interesting painter/sculptor from Chicago. Spontaneous, refined and searching. I enjoy her use of different types of painting within each piece she does. Her sculpture has just the right amount of insouciance and sassiness that gives each piece a great presence.

Steve Gibson Calowndra 1983 gouache on paper 40" x 30"

Going through the flat files and found an old series of drawings from the early 80's. Ideas for paintings and prints fed by a year down under traveling and living the life during the 60's.

Alan Davie
Alan Davie Village Myths No. 36 1983 oil on canvas 84.05" x 68.11"
www.tate.org.uk
Alan Davie has passed at the age of 93 just days before a spotlight exhibition at the Tate.
Davie has always been a favorite painter of mine since the late 60's when I was introduced to him by another professor who has since passed himself, Darryl Groover. Groover was equally influenced by Davie's use of unbridled color and fantastic free wheeling compositions of symbols, landscapes and the figure. There should be an exhibition here in the USA for him since he was connected to so many A/E painters here in NYC after being introduced to them by Peggy Guggenheim in the 50"s.
